Hans Christian Andersen - His own story! This most famous author came from the humblest beginnings. He was born in Denmark in 1805. He came from a very poor family. His father was a shoemaker and his mother worked hard as a washerwoman. Hans Christian Andersen had little formal education but he did have a wonderful imagination. His stories are all unique, some are funny whilst others are sad, even poignant. He died in 1875. Hans Christian Andersen - the Movie Many of the Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales and Stories have been immortalised in the famous 1952 movie about the life of the man ( a mostly fabricated biography) starring Danny Kaye in the title role. Andersen's great Fairy Tales and Stories were turned into songs, such as "There once was an Ugly Duckling...", "Thumbelina, Thumbelina, tiny little thing...", the Emperors New Clothes " The King was in the altogether...". The wonderful music and lyrics were composed and written by Frank Loesser. Moss Hart wrote the script which appealed to both children and adults alike.
